The Details
Cape Town and surrounds is filled with so many undiscovered gems that there’s always an adventure waiting to be had somewhere, even for those who’ve lived here their entire lives.

Let your weekends take you to the beautiful West Coast Town of Yzerfontein. Rather than driving straight through, make a pit stop, get out your car and spend the day exploring this charming seaside village.

Don’t let the town’s sleepy atmosphere fool you. If Yzerfontein's steeped history doesn’t impress you, then the unspoilt scenery and beaches, colourful town characters, and many exciting attractions certainly will.

Get to know this beautiful town on a scenic two-hour self-guided bike ride with your partner. Go at your own pace - take short breaks to appreciate the views, catch your breath and take photographs. Designated bike stands along the way afford you the opportunity to park your bike and explore further on foot.

Start your journey at the Tourism Office located in the centre of town and find all the information you need about the best restaurants and things to do in the area. Interestingly, the bureau is Yzerfontein's oldest-standing building, and once stored the town’s salt and bokkoms (a type of fish that’s dried and salted), which is how its nickname, “Die Vishuis”, came about.

Fishing forms a significant part of the locals' lives for sustenance and as a pastime. Peddle to the harbour and watch as fishing boats come in to offload their catch. In season, the area becomes a hive of activity when schools of snoek and yellowtail grace the waters. Buy fresh fish straight off the boat at the fish market.

Spend time on the beach at 16 Mile Beach, so named because it’s the longest uninterrupted beach on the South African coastline. Paddle in the waves, walk on the soft, white stretches of sand, and catch a bit of a tan before heading back to your bike.

Be sure to visit the historic lime kilns that were declared national monuments in the 1980s. A shortage of cement to build houses back in the day led to their construction. The furnaces were used to burn mussels, the ash of which was mixed with water to make cement. Evidence of this can be seen in the ancient, whitewashed cottages that still stand today.

Take a refreshing dip at Die Swemgat - the crystal-clear waters of the hidden rockpool are just so inviting! In for a scare? Visit The Langhuise; rumour has it that it’s haunted by a headless ghost seeking revenge for his gruesome murder.

For the hungry, there is an array of lovely restaurants mapped out on your bike ride. The Strandkombuis Restaurant sells seafood and pizza. Enjoy a bite to eat with views of the ocean. For afternoon tea, the Wild Flour Coffee Shop offers the best cakes and confectionary in town, and for home-cooked, hearty meals and a relaxed vibe, Yzervark Bistro is the place to beat.
