All you need to know about Montagu.
Route 62’s finest, Montagu is considered the region’s hidden gem. The town is tranquil, restful, well-kept, and famous for its unique rock formations, hot springs and preserved historic homes.
If you approach the town from the Breede River side, you’ll travel along Old Bains Road through Cogmans Kloof. The 6 kilometre pass features multi-layered rock formations that twist and contort in a multitude of sizes and shapes, natures own works of art.
The Avalon Springs became part of the Avalon Springs Hotel and Resort in 1982 and is predominantly used for recreation. It may be used as a form of entertainment these days, but back in the day, the properties of the water were (and to an extent, still are) considered healing.
Montagu boasts fantastic history, which can be discovered at the museums situated around the town, or on tours to the historic homes.
Reasons why you should visit Barrydale
Barrydale is one of those towns you can visit year-round. Plan a trip during the peak of summer, and you’ll be greeted by a myriad of scents wafting from orchards that bear a variety of fruit. Proteas, South Africa’s national flower, bloom in autumn, and in winter, the fields of bronze and gold transform into colourful tapestries along with Cape wildflowers.
The marvels of nature aren’t all that Barrydale is famous for. The annual puppet parade takes place every year and is an event that the whole town gets involved with. Each year, a different African animal is chosen, and a life-size puppet is created and paraded around town. Visitors flock from far and wide to view the spectacle.
Another unique attraction is Ronnies Sex Shop - what started by accident has become a nationwide phenomenon. People visit from around the world for a beer and to hang up their bra above the bar (a tradition).
Pop in at Diesel & Creme for the best milkshakes you’ve ever tasted. Walking into the vintage-style diner, you’ll feel like you’re on the set of a 20th century western movie. There are wooden tables, blackboard menus, and old tin signs advertising anything from Pepsi and Castle to Lucky Strike, Nugget and Castrol motor oil.
Robertson Valley - a must-visit for wine drinkers
The town of Robertson is recognised as the valley of the wines. The industry has grown twice in size in the last twenty years, boasting 20 registered wineries. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Methode Cape Classique are the most common wines produced on the route. Graham Beck and Van Loveren are two must-visits.
