The Details
Discover the diversity of South African wildlife while staying at the esteemed Mapesu Private Game Reserve. This is the perfect place for a breakaway with a loved one while admiring nature's best creations.

About Mapesu:

At 7,221 hectares, the Mapesu Private Game Reserve forms part of the Limpopo Valley Conservancy that borders the Mapungubwe National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also inside the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (GMTFCA), a large 5.909km2 transnational conservation zone uniting South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

There are 46 mammal species either currently on the reserve or that have been identified as having recently been on the reserve. In September 2016, the conservationists released a herd of elephants onto Mapesu; these incredible creatures continue to shape the reserve’s flora. In December 2017, the reserve aligned with the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Cheetah Meta Population Project (Endangered Wildlife Trust) where they reintroduced two cheetahs into the reserve. As of February 2018 the reserve also serves as a home for 22 African buffalo. Three of the big 5 roam Mapesu with the remaining 2 species (lion and rhino) occurring inside Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site where game drives are also possible.

Game drives at Mapesu Private Game Reserve: Game drives at the reserve allow you to get the full history of the region and its wildlife. One game drive per stay is included in this offer.

The facility also has a coffee shop and gift shop for you to visit after the tour.

UNESCO World Heritage Site: This enriching visit to the UNESCO Mapungubwe World Heritage Site holds important evidence of an African kingdom ruling between AD900-1300. It will leave you amazed as to how and why this civilzation thrived but later faded into history.

Ancient rock art: The Koaxa’s Rock Art Shelter is an archaeological gem that showcases Bushmen art as old as 3000 years. South Africa is fortunate to have some of the richest legacies of rock art in the world. Visit this extraordinary site and learn about how and why this early expression of humanity was created.

Merging of two mighty rivers: Admire the spectacular views of the merge between the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, where three countries meet in one point. One can walk the treetop boardwalk with birdhide and see the spectacular views at the outlook, and behold the land as far as the eye can see.

Baobab tree heaven: This region features loads of these larger-than-life trees, some of which are over 500 years old, with a circumference of 45 meters. Feast your eyes on “The Tree of Life”, a tree that can live up to 2,500 years and is considered a national treasure.

Bird lovers paradise: This region is a popular destination for bird-watchers. There are over 380 birds catalogued in the park and the reserve, but this region is known to have over 430 species. Grab binoculars and your birding book and start ticking the boxes of the birds you spot!

Tigerfish fishing: The Schroda Dam nearby offers not only bird lovers glimpses of the variety of birds, but also gives the angler a go at catching tigerfish. In 2014, a video was captured of a tigerfish leaping out of the water to catch a bird in mid-flight, bringing international attention to South Africa (click here to watch the fascinating clips).

About the campsite:

The campsite is nestled between shady cork trees, baobabs, mopanes and seringas. Being close to a natural waterhole attracts many of the animals on the nearby ridges and you will able to view the drop-bys from the comfort of your tent.

Leopards and hyenas frequent the area as well as numerous bird species such as African Green pigeons and Verreaux eagle owls.

There are 24 individual sites in an unfenced area. The location has three ablutions blocks each containing 4 showers, 4 toilets, 2 basins and an outside sink for washing. Electricity is available at the ablution blocks, but there are also power points located at the individual site for your convenience.

One of the best ways to connect with the African bush is to sleep under canvas.

Mapesu offers 15 luxury senior safari dome tents. Each tent has two extra length beds with linen and pillows, a canvas cabinet and a battery powered light. These 3mx3mx2.2m tents can comfortably accommodate two adults. Outside are two steel director chairs and two bundu basins under a canvas veranda.
