Our stay in cottage 2
When we arrived at Mont Rouge we met with Marisha du Plessis, our host. She was very helpful, friendly and informative and gave us a lot of information about the surrounding area and interesting places to visit and things to do. Thank You Marisha for your hospitality and for making us feel so very welcome and comfortable.
The mountain views all around are breathtaking. Cottage 2 in particular is perfect with a wrap around stoep and it is a stone throw away from the lovely round natural river water swimming pool. We stayed at the cottage during summer and the temperature outside was around 40 degrees celsius....very hot!. We were comfortable however because there is air conditioning in the cottage and a few dips in the pool cooled us down right away.
We visited some farms in the area to do wine tasting and had a lovely dinner at the well-established Tulbagh Hotel.
We loved every minute of our stay at Mont Rouge Cottages and will definitely return, maybe in winter next time!
Beautiful fruit farm with excellent mountain views
Was just what we needed to de-stress and to relax. The self-catering accommodation was very comfortable with everything we needed. One drawback when we were there was that it was in the middle of a heatwave with the temp between 36C and 40C. The air-con and fan was really appreciated and worked overtime. One was able to wander through this export fruit farm and we were very pleased to have a tour through the whole packaging "shed" and cold rooms with all the various processes so well explained by the brothers Du Plessis, third generation owners. We have a new found respect for the difficulties and red tape they face to get their products into our homes. We will visit again.
Great farm stay
My family and I had the pleasure to stay at the unit 2 of Mont Rouge’s farm cottages. What we enjoyed most was the set up of the rooms and the sound of the river located just outside the braai area. The beauty of the Tulbagh mountains and the entire nature landscape made it feel like paradise for nature lovers like us .
Our highlight was the pool thats located within the farm house and the tranquility of the nature reserve.
Thanks Marisha and your team
Hidden gem
What a lovely area and beautiful cottage. The views are to die for. Marisha is a lovely person who makes you feel welcome immediately. The fresh homemade bread was a huge bonus and surprise. Thank you once again for that. There is so much to see and do in Tulbagh that 2 days is much too short to visit. The Bush Pub is a must to visit as well and a nice pitstop on the way back to Mont Rouge in the evening. We will definitely visit Mont Rouge again.
Absolute serenity
Most amazed with the view that surrounds you and the peace and serenity is appreciated. The welcome loaf of home baked bread was divine. An absolute peaceful place if you need to escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
Had the pleasure to stay when I joined a cycle tour. Unfortunately a whole day of cycling in extreme heat, resulted in us only arriving at MR late afternoon. But we still had time to enjoy the spectacular sunset over the mountains. And also to chill next to the small (but cold!) pool next to where we were staying.
We were very pleased by being welcomed with a homemade bread waiting for us in the cottage..
The rooms all were beautifully decorated with attention to detail and some unique surprises - like the stunning flower painted wall in our cottage.
We had a fantastic stay and hope to be back in the near future.

The Details
Envisage waking up to the sights and scented aromas of fat, ripening fruits, jagged mountain peaks flooded by a soft morning light and the buzzing anticipation of a day full of promise and various explorations. Guests to the family-run fruit farm can look forward to all of this and more during their visit to Mont Rouge.
Visitors to Tulbagh will agree that the historic town, which lies in one of the most fertile valleys in South Africa, is absolutely pristine, and well worth the trek from Cape Town. Whether it’s fine regional wine you’re after, the ripening fruits that grow in abundance, insight into the culturally enriched region, or you simply wish to marvel at the natural beauty, a visit to the idyllic region helps you to clear your head and live for the moment. Create everlasting memories with a loved one, take many photographs, laugh, eat, drink and be merry.
Mont Rouge isn’t merely a place to rest your tired head after a day of exploring - a stay here is an experience in itself. The establishment has been owned and run by the Du Plessis’ bloodline for three generations, and their success can be attributed to their fervent passion, hard work, and a desire to provide a warm refuge to weary travellers.
Cottages are pet and child friendly and are equipped with a fireplace, parking, outside braai, television in living areas, own entrances, wheelchair access, and self-catering kitchen.
Warm hospitality is something that Mont Rouge pride themselves on, from the immaculately furnished rooms to the home cooked country cuisine. In the afternoons when the air’s crisp, take a stroll around the farmstead; if you take an amble through the 41-hectares of orchards, you’ll see an abundance of fruit, including peaches, nectarines, ripe plums, soft tomatoes and other types of citrus.
But what’s there to do in Tulbagh?
The answer: plenty. Whether you’re looking to experience the fruits of the vine (both the grapes and the citrus kinds) at nearby farms and wineries, learning about the town’s history, or enjoying fine dining experiences at the string of gourmet restaurants, there’s something in store for all who visit.
Familiarise yourself with the town’s history at the Oude Kerk Volksmuseum
Following a devastating earthquake in 1969, there was an urgency felt by the then town planners to preserve the town’s architectural heritage, thus a three-part museum was constructed on Church Street. Today, visitors can expect to see collections of Cape Furniture and a miscellany of colonial architecture.
