Old Time Charm
Lovely stay at the grand dame. Very friendly couple. When we could not use our very low car, the owner lent us hers to go out for supper. Breakfast was very good, but the best was the history of the house, and the view!

Away from it all
If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle then this is for you. You will be taken back in time with this old worldly grand house, with lovely forest walks, and the breakfasts are to die for.

Great Place, Great Value
This guesthouse was inexpensive and good value for money. The breakfasts and view of the river are superb. My room was very large and well-furnished. The guesthouse oozes history, which I have confirmed with locals.

Wonderful stay at Royston Hall Guest House
We had recently a wonderful two days stay at Royston Hall guest house. This over one-century-old house is amazing with a beautiful view of the river from the terrace where we had our breakfast. The owner and the staff are extremely friendly, the decoration inside the house is very nice, the property around the house with its tropical trees, flowers and birds are like a little paradise. A place we loved and we highly recommend.

The most amazing place, wonderful people
We had an awesome stay, the food was excellent, the staff fantastic. A beautiful historic place to stay. The room was lovely, we had hornbills knocking at our bathroom windows. Beautiful antiques and a very old and lovely grand piano.

Hidden Treasure
We spent 2 nights at Royston Hall and enjoyed every minute. The mansion breathes history through every pore. Furnished in style with lots of love for the small details. Had a warm welcome by Ria. Ntombi served a 4-star breakfast with a bright smile. Walked through the forest with Sky and Shadow - the great danes. Loads to explore along the South Coast - one weekend is not enough.

Royston Hall
This place is an unexpected treasure. Steeped in local history, hidden in the wonderful bush, the birdlife alone is worth stopping in for. Serene and calm. The staff are fabulous and Ria a perfect hostess. This is my second extended stay (5 days each) and I will be back again.

The Details
Perfectly preserved and encapsulated – the spirit of an era gone by.

Discover a place that’s steeped in rich history, but with all the comforts of modernity. Royston Hall welcomes you with its authentic South African hospitality, courtesy of your hosts and their furry four-legged family members – two large Great Danes and a pair of chatty Siamese cats.

The house is set in its own small nature reserve, which is home to an array of wildlife. Nestled in the tall indigenous coastal forest and adjacent to the mighty Umzimkulu River, it offers splendid views of the Indian Ocean in the distance. The guest house comprises of beautifully appointed rooms that guarantee your privacy.

The offer includes daily breakfast served, overlooking the valleys and the Umzimkulu River. You may be in the company of a few feathered friends while eating - resident birds feed on fig trees nearby.

Spend your days walking the forest and exploring the nature reserve, which is home to an array of animals and prolific birdlife. If you're more the explorer type, Port Shepstone and the great Umtentweni area has a cornucopia of exciting attractions and activities.

Top attractions:

Watch the sunsets, look out for dolphins, and walk or swim at Tweni Beach. While a little off the beaten track, the fact that the beach is not well known and a bit out of the way is a blessing for you and your family if you wish to escape the holiday crowds.

Play a game of golf on the Port Shepstone Golf Course. The 18-hole course is one of the most popular along the South Coast for avid golfers. The first nine holes see you through an indigenous forest with mangrove-lined fairways, while the second nine holes are more a links-style type of course featuring water hazards and with prolific birdlife.

The Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve offers excellent hiking opportunities – there are several nature trails through the forest and along the Umzimkulwana River. Baboons, small antelope and prolific birdlife dominate the trails, so be sure to keep an eye out. Interesting fact: the reserve is named after oribi – a type of antelope that's rarely seen in these parts.
